Gunpowder tea, sometimes referred to as “Handcrafted Tea” is a form of green tea made in the Zhejiang Province in China. Each leave is rolled, by hand or machine, into a small, round, pellet. Although generally only green tea is rolled in this fashion, sometimes Oolong tea is as well.
In the past, gunpowder tea was only rolled by hand, (thus the common nickname of “handmade” or “handcrafted tea.”) But today, the demand for this unique green tea has necessitated that the majority of gunpowder tea is made by machines. The highest grades, however, are still rolled gently by hand.
